25 days...
...until my flight to Seoul, South Korea and the beginning of a year teaching english with grades 3 through 11. Am I ready to leave? Nope. But I will be soon, won't I.
In 25 days I'll be spending a little over 17 hours in the air, flying from Minneapolis to Atlanta to Seoul. The flight time doesn't bother me as long as I can sleep. And on that note, please keep your fingers crossed that I've not cursed myself by mentioning this and actually will sleep most of the trip. Thank you.*
So where is Seoul, South Korea? Here's a handy map:

Seoul is the capital of South Korea. Depending on the source, there are from 9 to over 10 million people in Seoul, not including suburbs and urban sprawl. In comparison, New York City has over 8 million people, again not including suburbs and urban sprawl.
The current temperature in Seoul is 39° F/4° C. South Korea has four distinct seasons, like the Twin Cities. Though perhaps with less snow. Unless you're in the mountains.
Oh yes. Seoul has mountains. Mountains! My hiking boots are in the number three spot on the Need to Pack list, just below camera & fluoride-in-a-tube. More on that later.
In the meantime, for all things Seoul, click here. For the unofficial and hugely abridged version, click here.
It's late. Time to stop writing. Next segment: FAQs ~ The WhatWhy&Hows. You've already read the WhoWhere&Whens if you've made it this far. Thanks for making it this far, by the way. :)
Happy December, readers. All zero of you 'til I distribute the blog link. ~lol~
p.s. Shout out to the uber-clever Mel for the blog sub-title. Sample her sense of humor and love ofdork word play here.
*TangentAlert ~ The only time I've not been able to sleep during a lengthy flight was on the way to Beijing, when a family with crying children continually walked over me in a series of vain attempts to Comfort and Desist. I remember feeling a bit sorry for the parents... until we arrived in Beijing and I experienced THE WORST JET LAG EVER. A jet lag, in my memory, fully deserving of the all-caps treatment. Lesson learned: Screw the aisle - Request a window seat. Do I have one for the flight to Seoul? Not yet. A call to Delta is on the to-do list. You know the drill. Fingers crossed. Thank you.

I will drink your tea and watch your DVD's and think of you. :)
I read in a book once (fancy that) about a character who always kept one clock set to the time zone that her sister was living in, so that she never had to do the math about when to call. So, line item on my to do list is to set a Sara Clock to your local time. Then I can make sure to call you at 1am your time and pretend to be drunk. You know, to carry on the tradition of the out of town drunk phone call. All part of the service here at Mel's House of Dorkness.
I'm glad you started your blog. I'm looking forward to lots of pix!!
super cool! i'll live vicariously through you! jen
mel ~
cool beans! i'll set a clock on MN time too. 1 am seoul time will be 10 am your time. 1 am your time will be 4 pm seoul time. i'll probably call and leave drunken homesick messages on your phone over lunch. ~lol~ this will work nicely.
jen ~
come visit and live vicariously through you! er. yeah. you know what i mean. ;p
This is really cool, Sara!
Although I can't read the Korean titles at all! Is it because I'm on my Korean friend's PC, perhaps??
In my opinion, there are not four distinct seasons in the Twin Cities... Just summer and winter!! Just kidding. But I'm sure you will see what real spring and autumn should be... beautiful and nice and long and even-each season gets 3 months! Yeah!! I envy you..
I didn't have jet lag going to Japan but when I got back, I had it for a long time....
You might get lucky! For me, just sleeping a lot helps. I hope you can sleep on the plane, but even if it's not too good, if you get a good night sleep on the first night, you will be in good shape, I think.
momo ~
~lol~ true, we do really only have two seasons here, don't we. well, maybe two and a half. ~grin~ i am going to miss the snow, i think. i will do my best to sleep well the first night. my flight arrives at 5 pm, so by the time i reach the apartment i'll probably drop sound asleep on the floor. woo hoo!
So exciting! Glad you have a blog, I will be checking often. TOTALLY bummed that I won't be in MN until the day you leave- maybe our planes will pass in the air, I'll wave! So impressed and wish you an awesome experience. Keep up with the blog posts so we all know what you're up to.
chrissa~
it's still weird to write chrissa. ~grin~ rats!!! will definitely wave from the plane. safe flying to you & kevin & happy christmas! =)
