please see the original
'k. i know scorsese was due. i know the departed was good. but, ohohoh, please watch the original Hong Kong film. Infernal Affairs is better than the departed. the only thing the departed really improved upon was vera farmiga's role.
aside from vera farmiga and mark wahlberg, the acting in Infenal Affairs is better. c'mon. it has tony leung, anthony wong , and andy lau --- two of my favorite HK actors and one i can't stand (sorry Kay) but who does an awesome job in this film.
i am passionate about Infernal Affairs. passionate enough to write about it with actual capital letters. ~lol~ it is my favorite HK film.
the departed is a good film. it's not scorsese's best, but it's a good film. however, the american team who remade such a fantastic film in Infernal Affairs have won much praise while giving hardly any credit to the original.
i mean, get this, apparently during the oscar telecast it was announced that the departed was based on a film from japan. WTF? no. HONG KONG, dumbasses. Hong Kong. TT TT
that's what it comes down to for me, in the end. i like the underdog. i hate seeing the giant bloated corporate bottom-line-focused blah of american mainstream culture ingesting beautiful, original works and spitting them out as more bloated money-conscious blah. this blah, in turn, is passed off as original work to the majority of mainstream culture, who often don't know what they're missing.
i know. this happens all the time. look what miramax did to Shaolin Soccer. they massacred the film in the editing room and added a bunch of horrible rap music that ruined ending before sending it into US theaters. i'm scared to see the remakes of My Sassy Girl and Old Boy, two fantastic Korean films. (Old Boy is my favorite Korean film thus far.)
i'm not saying it's a bad thing to make remakes. it's not like there are many truly original ideas today, anyway. nearly everything is based on something else, right?
i'm not saying that all originals are better than the remakes, either.
however, why not give more credit to the original inspiration (aka, ripped off medium in some cases)? at least give people the option to choose something that could potentially be incredible or terrible, but might share new cultures or perspectives or stories we are otherwise denied.
oi, why is there so much mindless crap on television? in films? on the radio? how can mainstream entertainment dumb down everything for the public, yet still make so much money? do we really dislike thinking so much? a certain amount of dumbed-down, mindless entertainment is great. too much and we lose creative thinking, challenged thinking, any kind of thinking at all.
depressing.......................
um. do i sound like a 16 year old kid, railing against the establishment? ~sigh~ probably.
please forgive my rant. please watch Infernal Affairs. please forgive that this has next to nothing about living in korea. ~lol~ please have a good afternoon.
i'm off to sleep.

My 16 year old self was fond of throwing around words like antiestablishmentarianism and then crying when I got a C on a test. Which only goes to show that you probably shouldn't listen to a word I have to say. But I agree with you, so what does that mean?
:)
~lol~ thank you! am losing my perspective a little. am super glad you agree, is reassuring. :)
No, no, no! You are not a 16 year whining! These are super important critical issues and it's good to keep bringing them up, though I know it gets tiring to always be the one to do so. This is exactly the kind of thing we're addressing in my program. Okay, not this film specifically, but the larger philosophical questions behind the choices that are made in terms of representation and what gets said and what is left unsaid. Power to you girlfriend!
Oops, I meant a 16 year OLD... sheesh. I'm tired... :)
really, in your program? super cool!!!! how is school going? oh, hope all is well!
