the sound of over 48 million breaking hearts...

... is the sound of a soccer ball swishing into the net as switzerland made a second goal with only ten minutes left to play.

i've never felt such great excitement or such horrible disappointment for a sporting event before. i love the superbowl, it's fun to watch the olympics on tv, i love the world series and have even been to a twins world series playoff game. but, oh, my god, nothing compares to the world cup in korea. do i sound dramatic? hrm. i do have yet to go to sleep - i went to city hall to watch the 4 am game with around 500,000 or so world cup fans. !!!!!!!f!!!!!!u!!!!!!!n!!!!!!!!!! ariel photo of city hall during a previous match here.

we arrived a little before 2 am, and wandered the streets looking for a place to stand or sit. i love korean nationalism when it comes to supporting their soccer team. i've never seen anything like this. that ariel photo before? i saw the giant flag. i saw the fireworks. i stood to the side of the stage and watched the performers on two giganticlyhumungous screens. it was incredible - a sea of red and black swam before my eyes, everywhere i looked. red for the fan shirts, and black for the hair. ^o^

i will post photos soon with more description. this has been one of my best nights here thus far, even though the team lost and are now out of the world cup. oh god. people are so depressed. but. four more years. sorry, USA. whatever, Brazil. i'm a Red Devil fan from here to forever.

love,

~sara, resplendent in cargo capris, a "Fighting Corea" red shirt, soccer bandana, flashing-light red devil horns, paint on my right cheek, and a tattoo of the korean flag on my left

**~~i m such a geek~~**

p.s. in 7 and a half hours i'm going to Lotte World, a small amusement park 3 subway stops away. woooooooooooo, roller coasters!!!!!!!! mom & dad? i'm totally going on the round swingy one that flies out over the water. *()*

p.p.s. slump, you say? what slump? it's obviously gone. hallelujah, the slump is gone!

p.p.p.s. please ignore the numerous spelling mistakes. i'm choosing sleep over spell check. ~lol~

p.p.p.p.s. oh. about that tattoo? it's fake. but i like it. will see how long it lasts. wh00t!

Wow!!! How exciting! I thought it was incredible to be in GB when the Pack won the Super Bowl but you're right- cheese heads have nothing on these Red Devils! (Don't tell Dan I said that.) SO glad your blog is back. I missed it greatly! Glad the slump is over. Glad you're feeling better!! Glad you're having fun! Miss you!

What, no question mark on your butt??

Next WC, we should go. We'll take a week's vacation to whatever country it's in, and see as many games as we can. Start saving now!

Am glad that you're having fun. Someone on MPR the other day was talking about how he wants to build a park downtown where people could gather for stuff like that. He was talking about after the Twins won the World Series, and everyone wanted to party, but there wasn't anywhere to march or gather. I think it's a fun idea, but who knows if it'll go anywhere.

Hugs!
